A Recent media study conducted by the University of Maryland found that many college students have become so addicted to electronic media that they felt physical and psychological anxiety after being cut off from their phones, TVs and computers for just 24 hours. In this extra credit activity, we will conduct a similar study, except you will be cut off from the electronic media that you are most “addicted” to for 1 week.  You can add UP TO 5 percentage points to your 4th quarter grade, depending on the degree to which you accomplish the following tasks:

1.   Give up your cell phone for a week (or you can give up another medium that you are more “addicted” to).  You will need a note from a parent/guardian verifying that you have turned over your cell phone for 7 days (or given up the alternative media).

2.      Keep a free style daily journal recording your feelings, experiences and observations.

3.     At the end of the week, write a well organized and detailed reflection.  You may consider the following questions, or questions that I haven’t considered:

-Did you feel any physical or psychological anxiety?  When did you miss the device most?

-What did you do with the extra time?

-What did you learn about yourself and your media habits?
