Personal Financial Management:

It's all about the MONEY, and we will be talking about every aspect of it in Personal Financial Management!!!

This class exposes students to math that will be used regularly in real-life financial situations. The first part of the year we will focus on improving math computational skills and becoming comfortable with applying these skills to financial aspects of adult life: such as pay checks, pay periods, cash purchases, etc. We will then focus on transferring these skills to real-life situations through a variety of activities, and using real-life practice. Further into the year we will create a budget that would be typical of an independent adult. The budget will include such things as:

                                      housing         transportation
                          clothing        food
                          insurance      entertainment
                          vacation        home furnishing

Students will use the local newspaper and the internet to obtain realistic and functional information to develop that budget. They will be shopping on line, checking out the real estate sections, looking at the cost of taxes in the area, and planning a two week vacation for themselves.

Employment opportunities will be discussed, as well as pay, benefits, and taxes related to income levels. During the last quarter of the year, we will look at personal banking, loans and checking accounts, and use this information to develop a ‘practice’ check book, as well as to reconcile accounts.

Creating a budget encourages a tremendous amount of class discussion and provides an opportunity for students to explore and investigate financial obligations in the adult world.   This class will provide students with the chance to develop math skills that are realistic and life long!

Along the way we will explore individual interests and what jobs are connected to those interests.  Career Cruising will provide us job information including education needed, potential earnings by state, the number of these jobs in the state right now, a typical daily schedule in this job, interviews with people who hold these jobs, what they like and dislike about the job, and what other jobs or careers this interest could be related to.
