Daily Lessons and Assignments

This list includes  class lessons and assignments.  All assignments are worked on in class and most should be completed by the end of the period.  On the few occassions that students do not complete their work, it must be completed for homework and handed in the next day.

 Mid Term Exam

Monday, January 30th, 10:00

The exam will cover all material that we have discussed so far this year.  The questions are taken directly from the textbook, and are examples that were completed in class or for homework.  Students may use calculators for most of the test, and are encouraged to bring their own.  There are 8 questions which will need to be answered without the use of a calculator (adding decimals, subtracting decimals and estimating).  Students must bring updated notebooks to the exam period.  A notebook check will be completed.  Notebooks will be graded on: 

- sections organized/labeled
- papers labeled and organized
- papers in order by date

 

  

1/25   Complete Test to assess closing cost, monthly payment, and interest.

1/24   Review the Connecticut town-by-town chart showing mill rates.  Find towns in the regional area as well as surrounding towns.  Compare and contrast the differences in mill rates.  Complete chart calculating taxes for property in each of our surrounding towns.  Assignment page 26 numbers 5 and 7, 8-12.

1/23    Discuss real estate taxes, what they are used for and how they are determined.  Review tax vocabulary (tax rate, assessed value, market value, rate of assessment, mill rate) and how to determine the tax amount on a piece of property. 

1/20   Complete and review monthly calculations (page 23).  Test to assess closing cost, monthly payment, and interest.

1/19   Where Does It All Go?  Compute interest and principal together by completing page 24.  Students will show their understanding of the mortgage payment by calculating Interest, Principal and new balance for 12 monthly payments on an original loan of $155,852.80 (page 23).

1/18    Review closing costs.  Complete page 18 numbers 6-8.  Discuss the monthly payment and how interest is determined (Interest =Principal X Rage X time).  From that, calculate the amount of the payment that goes toward the principal as well as what the new principal is after the payment.  Complete chart on page 20 together to practice this.  Assignment Page 20 numbers 9-15.

1/17   Discuss closing costs involved when getting a mortgate (credit report, attorney fee, title search, escrow account, points, etc.)  Assingment Page 17-18 numbers 2-5

1/13   Compare numbers for loans that have the same interest rate, but varying length (years) as well as loans that have the same length (years) but varying interest rates.  What impact does the interest rate have on the monthly payment? the total interest paid?  What impact does the length (years) have on the monthly payment? the total interest paid?  Begin page 16 in packet - determining monthly mortgage payment for chosen housing options (condo, house, dream house).

1/12   Compare monthly payment, total paid and total interest based on a variety of interest rates as well as lengths of mortgage (page 15 in packet).

1/11   Review formulas needed for monthly payment, total paid, and total interest.  Assignment- page 13 in packet, numbers 7 - 20

1/10  Compute figures for a mortgate, including monthly payment, total amount paid for life of loan, and total interest paid to bank.  

1/9   Powerpoint presentation on concepts of mortgage - borrowing, downpayments, interest rates, length of mortgage, etc.

1/6  Complete page 10 in packet, numbers 7-15, to understand putting a down payment on a house.

1/5  Discuss pros and cons of each housing option chosen from classified ads.  List the positive and negative aspects of each.

1/4   Discuss available options for housing - rent, own, purchase.  Look in classified ads to find a viable rental apartment, condominium, house as well as a dream house. 

1/3/12  Housing Budget - Look at classified ads for housing rentals. Discuss what information is important to include in an ad when looking for an apartment/advertising an apartment.  Using a list of normal abbreviations, rewrite 3 ads deciphering the abbreviations and writing them out fully.

12/19 - 12/23  Gross Pay to Net Pay - Using Monopoly Money, students will receive money for their gross pay.  They will determine the amount of all deductions, take that amount of money from the gross pay, and decide on the final net pay.

12/14    Group Insurance - Discuss purpose of health insurance, cost of group insurance when offered to employees and deduction to gross pay.  Individual Assignment - Page 109  5-11

12/13   Review Social Security and Medicare Taxes deducted from Gross Pay.  Use tax tables to deduct Federal Income tax from Gross Pay.  Independent Assignment - Page 108   8-15

12/12    Complete Powerpoint Presentation.  Independent Assignment - Social Security and Medicare Taxes         Page 107 # 3-7

12/9     Powerpoint Presentation - Explanation of Social Security, Medicare and FICA (Federal Insurance Contribution Act) 

12/8    Practice determining deductions for Federal Income Tax.  Assignment - Pg. 101-102  8-18 even

12/7    Net Income - Class discussion about what deductions are made from gross pay.  Review of Federal Income Tax as well as reading an actual chart to determine deductions from a weekly pay check based on income and withholding allowances claimed.

12/6     Complete Pay Check Assessment

12/5    Assessment to include all pay options covered - Hourly pay, Overtime pay, Salary, Time Cards, Piecework, and Commission.

12/1     Commission - Independent assignment - Pg. 91 22 - 27

11/30    Commission - Independent assignment - Pg. 90  18-21.  Work on Career Cruising.  There are 16 Career Clusters which group occupations and jobs together based on skills and knowledge required.  Students watched videos from YouTube which show typical jobs involved in several of the career clusters.

11/29    Commission - the amount of money that you are paid for selling a product or service.  Review by completing page 90  numbers 3 - 17 together. 

11/28    Review time cards which were completed 11/17.  Redo page one as a class.  Students complete page two independently to improve grades.

11/22    Salary is a fixed amount of money that you earn on a regular basis.  Salary can be paid weekly, biweekly, semimonthly or monthly.  Assignment  page 88  11 - 19

11/21    Piecework - Understand that you can receive a specific amount of money for each item that you complete.  Assignment - Page 86 13 - 21

11/18     Career Cruising - Use school subjects, education, tasks, earnings, working conditions to find careers that fit your interests.  Worksheet 5

11/17    Weekly Time Cards - calculate time worked for given time periods.  Calculate daily and weekly totals.

11/16    Weekly Time Cards - discussion on types of time cards, time clocks, importance of keeping track of time worked.  Assignment  Pgs. 83 - 84   9-20

11/15    Overtime Pay - Discussion of time and a half, double time, time plus $1.00, time plus $ .50.   Assignment  Pg. 81  9 - 15

11/14    Hourly Pay - understanding hourly pay and straight time pay.  Assignment  Pg. 79  11-27

11/11    Assessment on Estimation and Problem Solving Skills

11/10    Problem Solving - Identifying Information - Assignment  Pg. 54  choose any 10 problems to complete. Show all work!!

10/28    Introduction of Problem Solving: Using the Four-Step Method  1. Understand the problem  2. plan what you need to do to solve   3. work - carry out the plan, complete calculations   4. answer - check to see if it is reasonable and answers the question   Assignment - Page 52 # 2-13  choose any 5 problems to complete.  Show all work!!

10/27    A special gift.... time in class to work on any missing work and/or to redo any assignments that have low grades.

10/26   Assessment of all types of estimation covered.

10/25   Introduction of estimation by clustering.  When numbers to be added are close to same quantity, you can cluster the numbers.  Assignment - Pg. 49-50  # 14 - 24 even

10/24    Introduction of compatible numbers estimation - change numbers in problem to numbers that can be computed easily.  Assignment - Page 47  # 21-30

10/21    Introduction of Front End Estimation - using the front end digits to estimate the sum of digits.  Assignments - Page 45 #9-23 odds

10/20    Introduction of Estimation by rounding - round the numbers to the highest place value, then perform the indicated computation. 

10/19    Complete graphing presentations to class mates.  Estimation assignment - Page 43-44 #17 to # 28 all

10/18    Students present graphing projects to class mates.  Begin lesson on estimation.

10/17    Complete work on "The Great Graphing Goings-On" including paragraph explaining most informative graph.  Work on Career Cruising to see how school courses are related to specific jobs.

10/14    Students complete a quiz on Reading and constructing graphs/charts.  Continue work on "The Great Graphing Goings-On"

10/13    Begin work on "The Great Graphing Goings-On"  Students gather data from a list of suggested web sites and using Microsoft Excel, create 3 different graphs to present the data.  A written assessment of the graphs will explain which graph best represents the data and why.  Students will give an oral presentation explaining their work.  Grading Rubrics have been provided.

10/7    Introduction of how to construct graphs using Microsoft Excel.  Class created graph together to show Number of Town Employees (from worksheet)  Students independently constructed two graphs on Microsoft Excel from the two charts on worksheet (ACME Industries Stock, Heban's Department Store).  Use capabilities in Excel to create 4-5 varieties of graphs. 

10/6    Learning how to construct graphs, both line graphs and bar graphs.  Complete pages 39-40 # 3-8.

10/5    Introduction of charts and graphs - how to read a table or chart and how to clasify an item in a table or chart.  Page 36-37  8-22 even, 23-45 all

10/4    Test   Writing decimals as fractions, fractions as decimals andfinding a percentage of a number

10/3    Determining 10% off without using calculators

9/30    Make-up day!  Students have class time to check Powerschool for missing work, and complete any missing assignments.
