Daily Lessons and Assignments

Period 4 Reading Writing Enhancement

This list includes class lessons and assignments. All assignments are worked on in class, and most should be completed by the end of the period. On the few occassions that students do not complete their work, it must be completed for homework and handed in the next day.

 

4/5   Let's Make a Homophone!!!Our own vocabulary version of Let's Make a Deal! Students will be competing against each other for cash and prizes (not really) to see who knows their homophones best!!

4/4   Study for Let's Make A Homophone by using www.quizlet.com , use flashcards, quiz with a partner, etc.

4/3   Read independently using book students have chosen from Media Center. Homework - complete Reader's Response - creating a Prediction to the reading.

4/2   Read independently using book students have chosen from Media Center.  Homework - complete Reader's Response - creating a Connection to the reading.

3/30   Complete story questions, read independently or practice homophones on Quizlet.

3/28 - 3/29   Read and annotate "Apollo 13".  Complete comprehension questions at end of story, using annotations to refer to for assistance.

3/27   Reviewed annotations students wrote on last story to see examples of well written annotations as well as how we can improve brief annotation.

3/26   Vocabulary - Homophones  morning - mourning,  cousin - cozen,  cell - sell   Complete visual worksheet giving a dictionary definition for each word as well as one other activity listed on the worksheet.

3/23   Newspaper reading!!  We will be relaxing with the newspaper and sharing what we read.  What better way to use our reading strategies?  Students will be shown how to stop and think about what they are reading by retelling what they read, showing pictures, asking questions, sharing connections, etc.

3/22 Complete comprehension questions based on the main idea and supporting details.

3/20-3/21 Some students are working on the Lexia Program to enhance their decoding skills. There is also a group working on comprehension skills. They are reading a story and sharing their internal reading voices which are making connections, asking questions, making predictions, stopping and thinking about the story and retelling the story. No writing involved, just lots of reading strategies going on!!

3/19   Vocabulary - Homophones  phase - faze,   pride - pried,   weak - week   Complete visual worksheet giving a dictionary definition for each word as well as one other activity listed on the worksheet.

3/16   Independent Reading - students have the opportunity to read the books they have chosen.  EVERYONE is anxious to read and has been asking for reading time!!!  A great big READING RAH to all of these amazing readers!!

3/15  Complete comprehension questions based on the main idea and supporting details.

2/27 - 3/9 We have been working on a variety of reading reviews which have helped some students prepare for the CAPT test, and others to improve their comprehension skills. These have included vocabulary activities, use of reading strategies, understanding questions, and monitoring reading, to name a few.

2/24   Let's Make a Homophone!!!Our own vocabulary version of Let's Make a Deal! Students will be competing against each other for cash and prizes (not really) to see who knows their homophones best!!

2/23   Complete CAPT responses for "Juanita's Dream."  Review vocabulary words using Quizlet.com, flash cards, etc.

2/22   Review CAPT expectations (MAS) for Response for Literature.  Look at scoring rubric used.  Review sample question and steps that can be used to develop well written response.  Students work independently on written responses for "Juanita's Dream."

2/21    Review section of story read yesterday using annotations.  Complete reading "Juanita's Dream." 

2/20   Introduction of short story "Juanita's Dream."  Do pre-reading strategies.  Read story aloud, stop and think, annotate, creating a brief summary for each paragraph.  Practice useful reading stratagies.

2/17   Homophone Review - spend time on quizlet.com to review all of the homophones we have worked on so far.  Beat your own time or beat the time of your friend!!!

2/16   Complete comprehension questions for reading assessments.  If completed, students have the opportunity to do silent reading of books chosen independently. 

2/15  Continue work on individual reading assessments.  Begin comprehension questions.

2/14   Introduce 2 stories - "I Survived the Titanic" and "All Alone in the Jungle."  Complete pre-reading strategies (skim, scan, questions, predictions, activate prior knowledge, connections). Begin reading and annotating story independently. Annotations will be brief summary of each paragraph. During reading strategies will focus on stop and think, write about it, recording the most important information from every paragraph.  This is an independent activity which will assess student's ability of this strategy.

2/13   Warm up - Daily Oral Language - Vocabulary - Homophones   peek - peak- pique   rode - road - rowed     Complete visual worksheet giving a dictionary definition for each word as well as one other activity listed on the worksheet.

2/10   Complete written responses to questions for story.  Silent reading of books students have chosen independently.

2/9   Complete reading and annotating story "Trapped on the 37th Floor" and begin comprehension questions.

2/8    Warm-up   Daily Oral Language - Continue "Trapped on the 37th Floor" using a pre-reading review and during reading strategies.

2/7   Warm-up - Daily Oral Language    Introduce "Trapped on the 37th Floor"  Complete pre-reading strategies (skim, scan, questions, predictions, activate prior knowledge, connections).  Begin reading and annotating story.  Annotations will be brief summary of each paragraph.  During reading strategies will focus on stop and think, write about it, recording the most important information from every paragraph.

2/6   Vocabulary - Homophones  who's - whose    presence - presents    stare - stair   Complete visual worksheet giving a dictionary definition for each word as well as one other activity listed on the worksheet.

2/3 Organize notebooks. Silent reading of books students have chosen for independent reading.

2/2 Complete review of Mid Term Exam.

2/1 Introduce rubric that will be used for weekly participation grade. Review Mid Term Exam. Review all questions, and refer to specific paragraphs to find details that support correct answer(s).
