Reading/Writing Enhancement
These classes will consist of group activities as well as individualized work based on each student’s reading level and ability. Yearly reading assessments will be completed for each child. This information will help to determine what materials are best suited for each student, as well as the student’s strengths and weaknesses. Students will have access to several reading programs including:
Reading Advantage (for direct instruction of reading skills)
Read Naturally (a computer-based program geared toward comprehension and fluency)
SRA (an individualized comprehension and skill development program)
LEXIA (a computer-based program geared toward increasing decoding strategies)
We will also use a variety of short stories as well as real-life reading materials, including newspaper and magazine articles. The focus is always on reading material which is of high interest, but geared toward the correct level for each individual student.
Instruction will cover specific reading strategies that can be applied to all aspects of reading, both in and out of school. These strategies include:
Visualization
Making Connections
Making Predictions
Retelling the story
Stop and think about the story
Asking Questions
Write about the story (annotations)
Writing will also be a main focus of this class. We will use Writer’s Companion (a computer program) to assist in creating well-structured paragraphs, and to enhance and develop writing skills.
Students will have many opportunities to develop and improve their individual abilities in the Reading Writing Enhancement class.
